Sarah Jane Tarrant was born in 1848 in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England – the daughter of John Tarrant, a wheelwright, and Elizabeth Wright.

She married Charles Bishop on 20 June 1872 in Basingstoke and they had three sons before they emigrated to Otago in 1879 on the Taranaki.

They had a further six children after their arrival and when Sarah signed the suffrage petition they were living in Hampden in North Otago.

Charles died in 1906, he is buried in the Hampden Cemetery.

In later life Sarah went to live near her family in Hawera.

She later moved to Levin where she died on 4 October 1933, she is buried in the Old Levin Cemetery.
