Sarah Morgan was born in Pukekohe on the 25th of December 1865, the second youngest of 8 children, to William Morgan and Jane Elizabeth Robinson. Her father was from Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Her mother also emigrated from England, however her exact birthplace is unknown. Her parents married in Auckland, New Zealand, on 27 December 1853. Sarah’s younger sister Annie Hartland (née Morgan) also signed Sheet 17 of the 1893 suffrage petition. 

Sarah married Alexander Johnston, from Angus, Scotland, on the 22nd of March 1894. She was 28 years old and he was 32. They went on to have five daughters: Eleanor (1895), Elsie Florence (1896), Winifred (1898), Constance Evelyn (1901), and Ruth Ina (1904). Alexander was killed tragically in a train collision at a level crossing on Argyle Street, Morningside on the 8th of July 1930, at the age of 68. Sarah passed away on the 30th of December 1933, at 68 years old.
