Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Sloan was born about 1835 in Renfrewshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Sloan, a cotton hand loom weaver, and Agnes Auld.

She married John Reid, a coal miner, on 31 December 1857 in New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire and they had three children.

The family emigrated to Otago in 1863 on the Victory and settled in the Tokomairiro district where John and his brother James operated a coal mine.

They had a further seven children and when Sarah signed the suffrage petition they had retired to Fairfax, near Milton.

John died at their home in 1896 and Sarah died on 18 May 1915 - they are buried in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
