Sarah Rigby was born about 1840 in Lancashire, England – the daughter of John Rigby, a plasterer, and Ann Parnell.

She married Thomas Stubley, a cotton spinner, in Ashton, Lancashire in 1861.

In June 1863 they emigrated, with Thomas’ sister, to Canterbury on the Victory.

They had two children, one who died in infancy, and they settled in Dunedin.

When Sarah signed the suffrage petition she was living in Hanover St, Dunedin.

She died at her home in Great King St on 15 August 1906, Thomas died in 1920 and they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
