Biographical information provided by Stefanie Lash, Archives New Zealand, for the He Tohu exhibition:

Selina Holtham was born in 1856 in the village of Birdlip in the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire. In 1877, at the age of 20, she emigrated with her parents William and Sarah and her elder sister Lydia, and the family settled in Blenheim.

In 1877 she married Francis Bowden Terrill, a widower with five children. Together they had six more children, of whom five survived childhood. In 1885 they moved to Tua Marina, where Francis owned the general store and was described as a veteran local preacher in the Wesleyan church. Selina practised as a ladies’ nurse at her home. After Francis died, Selina moved in with her daughter Irene. She died in 1934, aged 78.
