Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ada Ralph was born in 1866 in Islington, London – daughter of Alfred Ralph, a farrier and Ann Berry.

Ada came to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Buckinghamshire.

In 1890 Ada married John Bradley Shacklock and they had three children. John was a son of Henry Ely Shacklock who established a foundry which became a very successful large factory producing coal ranges. John worked in the family business and in 1904 became Mayor of South Dunedin, he also served as Mayor of Dunedin for a year in 1914.

John died in 1935 and, in October 1936, Ada donated a house to the Methodist Central Mission Eventide Home in Dunedin to be called the JB Shacklock Home.

Ada died on 30 January 1937, she is buried with her husband in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
