Anna is the mother of Emily Siedeberg - New Zealand's first woman doctor.
Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Anna Daly Thompson was born about 1835 in Lurgan, Ireland, the daughter of George Thompson, a barrister and solicitor. She arrived in New Zealand on the Pride of the West in 1864.
In 1867 she married Franz David Siedeberg, a gold miner. They had five children and lived in Central Otago. Franz was a pioneer of the gold dredging industry but was declared bankrupt in 1873. His dredge the Salamander was sold, as was the family’s four-roomed house and contents in Clyde.
The family moved to Dunedin where Franz started work as a builder and contractor. When Anna signed the suffrage petition the family were living in York Place.
Franz died in 1902 and Anna died at her daughter’s house on 25 February 1923. They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
Her obituary says that 'she was of a quiet and retiring disposition, devoting her life to her children and her home.'
