Sophia Waterfield Strachan (nee Gibbs) was born 10 October 1861, in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia, and came to Dunedin, New Zealand, when she was a year or two old.
Her parents were David Waterfield Gibbs and Louisa Mary Ann White. Sophia was the third of 13 children. She married Charles Strachan (born in Glasgow, 1853) in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, in 1879. He was a saddler, but her occupation is not recorded. The couple also had 13 children.
Charles Strachan died in Dunedin in 1929 and Sophia died in Dunedin on February 23, 1938.
