Susan Black Paul was born near Milton in 1867 – the daughter of Robert Binnie Paul, a farmer, and Mary McKay Paterson. (See 118 M Paul)
In 1885 Susan was appointed to the post of pupil teacher at Stirling before she went to the Training College.
In 1889, after her training, Susan was appointed as mistress at Glenledi School where she was teaching when she signed the suffrage petition in Milton.
In 1897 she was appointed as first female assistant at the Alexandra School.
The 'settlers at Glenledi and the surrounding districts tendered a social', as 'a slight recognition of her services to the district.' During the evening Susan was presented 'with a fine China tea set' as a token of appreciation for her services.
She taught at Alexandra until the mid 1900s when she resigned due to ill-health.
After she left teaching Susan lived with her brother in Oamaru before moving back to Milton.
She died on 16 September 1940 and she is buried with her siblings in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
Her obituary said she 'had a wide circle of friends, and amongst the many messages of sympathy were ones from pupils.'
