Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Susan Christina Beattie was born in 1874 in New Zealand – the daughter of James Beattie, a farmer, and Margaret Ann Whiteside.

When she signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family at Highcliff on the Otago Peninsula.

Susan married Charles Pratzel, a labourer and widower with three children, in 1899.

In 1903 the courts charged Charles with 'failing to provide his wife with adequate means of maintenance. An order was made for the payment of 7s per week'.

What happened to Charles after this is unknown.

Susan re-married in 1919 to Charles Saunders - she died on 27 August 1957.

She was cremated and her ashes scattered.
