Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Susan Eagerty was born about 1855. She is possibly the Susan Hegarty who arrived in Otago in 1874 on the Cartsburn from County Tyrone.

She married, brickmaker, William Dunford on June 22nd 1875 in Dunedin and they had 14 children.

The family lived in Andersons Bay where Susan signed the suffrage petition.

William was declared bankrupt in 1886 and started working as a carter.

Five of their sons served in WW1 – 3 died as a result and in 1919, the carters of Dunedin presented William with ‘an illuminated address framed in oak’ featuring photos of their 3 sons.

Susan died in 1921 and the following year William retired from business.

He died in 1933 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
