Susan Rendall was born in Hazelbury Plucknett in Somersetshire in 1849. The illegitimate daughter of Mary Anne Rendell a 21 year old weaver. In her early years Susan lived with her mother & grandparents in Hazelbury then later she worked as a cook in Axminster, Devon. She emigrated to Otago on the Dover Castle and arrived in Dunedin in October 1873.

In 1876 Susan married Thomas Gallagher and they had 5 children together.

Susan died on 5 June 1925, 9 years after Thomas, and is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
