Susan/Susannah Gunter was born in 1867 in London – the daughter of Richard Gunter, a paper stainer, and Matilda Hurlock.
She emigrated to New Zealand in the 1880s and married Joseph Priestly Heaps, a farmer, in 1890.
They had seven children and lived in Purekiriki in the Owaka Valley where Susan signed the suffrage petition.
Susan died on 9 November 1933 at Balclutha and Joseph died in Roxburgh in 1939, they are both buried in the Balclutha Cemetery.
