Biographical information provided by Flora Feltham for the He Tohu exhibition:

Susan Propert Runciman arrived in New Zealand from Ireland with her four daughters in 1883. They were joining their husband and father, William Edward Runciman, in Timaru. Two more daughters and a son would be born in New Zealand. Susan, William and their children moved to Dunedin in the late 1880s, where Susan died in 1908, aged 58. She is buried in Dunedin’s historic Northern Cemetery. Susan’s eldest daughter Jane Elizabeth Runciman became a renowned, tireless social reformer and trade unionist from within the Dunedin Tailoresses’ Union.
