Susan Ann Ross was born in 1868 in New Zealand – the daughter of Alexander Ross, a sawmiller, and Helen Margaret McFadyen.

She grew up in Invercargill where her mother died in 1877.

When she signed the suffrage petition she was living with her father in Tyne St.

Susan married William Wright Stewart, a draper, in 1894 and they had one son.

The family lived in Auckland where William died in 1934 and Susan died on 12 June 1955, they are buried together in the Hillsborough Cemetery.
