Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Thirza Alice Maslin was born in 1859 in Wiltshire, England – the daughter of George Maslin, a fellmonger, and Letitia Emma Smith.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in 1877 on the Hereford and they settled in Dunedin.

Thirza married hotelkeeper Robert Thomas Waters in 1882 and they had three children.

When Thirza signed the suffrage petition she was living in Jones St, South Dunedin.

She remarried on 21 April 1896 to John Lindsay – the marriage notice said she was the 'divorcee of R.T. Waters'.

They lived at Burnside, near Dunedin, where John died in 1921.

Thirza died at her home in Green Island on 1 September 1934 – she is buried with John in the Green Island Cemetery.
