Agnes Allan was born in 1855 in East Taieri, Otago - the daughter of James Allan, a storekeeper, and Jane Sutcliffe.
She married James Cox Thomson, an accountant, at Hope Hill, East Taieri, on 19 February 1879.
They lived, at first, in Invercargill then in Dunedin where James worked as a hardware merchant.
They had eight children and when Agnes signed the suffrage petition they were living in Newington, Maori Hill, Dunedin.
James died in Hamilton in 1914, he is buried in the Hamilton West Cemetery.
Agnes died in Dunedin on 23 August 1945, she was cremated and her ashes buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
