Ursula Anderson was born on 18 March 1854 in Delting, Shetland Islands – the daughter of Robert Anderson, a crofter, and Ursula Andrew.

Ursula married Laurence Irvine, a shepherd, on 6 August 1874 in Lerwick, Shetland. Later that year the couple emigrated to Otago on the Nelson.

They had 11 children (one died in infancy) and the family lived in Caversham, Dunedin.

Ursula died on 25 February 1906 at her home in Bradshaw St; Laurence died in 1931. They are buried in the Southern Cemetery.
