Ursula Jane Hicks was born in 1857 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of George Edward Hicks and Ursula Jane Wilson.

She came to New Zealand with her parents in the early 1860’s where she married William Frederick Charles Fail, a brass finisher, in 1879.

They had six children and when Ursula signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Eden St, Dunedin.

Ursula died on 25 July 1909 while visiting Fairlie and William died in 1930 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
