Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Alexanderina McKay was born about 1845 in Sutherlandshire, Scotland – the daughter of Kenneth McKay, a cooper, and Margaret McDonald.

She emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the “Mairi Bhan” and she married Andrew Waters, a farmer, on 1 December 1876 in the North Taieri parish.

They had five children and in 1892 they were living in North East Valley, Dunedin when Andrew died. He is buried in the Gore Cemetery.

When Alexanderina signed the suffrage petition she was living in Gore keeping a boarding house.

She died in Dannevirke on 3 July 1909 and is buried in the Settlers Cemetery.
