Biographical information provided by Ken Miller for the He Tohu exhibition:

Winifrede Clarke was born around 1859 and married Elijah Brokenshire in Auckland in 1884. They lived in Te Aroha, Waikato and had eleven children, ten of whom survived to adulthood. The first child was born when Winifrede was 26 and the last when she was 44. These children included Irene who was born in 1889 and Ernest born in 1895. Ernest was a soldier during the First World War and died in France in 1916 aged just 21. Winifrede died the following year aged 58. Irene died in 1973 aged 84 and on her headstone was written 'She wasn’t said to be good. She was.'
