Biographical information provided for by Christa Hopkinson for the He Tohu exhibition:
Note that there are a number of spelling changes in the electoral rolls for both Albertine and Thorvald (eg Thorwald and Thorswald for Thorvald, Alberthina , Alberthine, and Albertine for her first name, and Hermania, Hermane, and Hannana for her Alberthine’s middle name). Because of the various spellings of her middle name, I have chosen to use the spelling of her name in her death notice.
Alberthine moved to Napier, New Zealand from Norway in 1873 at age 23 aboard the Høvding. On 13 December 1873, she married Thorvald Wilhelm Christian Krogh at St Paul’s Presbytarian Church in Napier. They lived with their three children on Waghorne St in Port Ahuriri, an area known for its shipping companies. Their children were heavily involved in sport in the Napier community. Alberthine worked as a 'storeman' while Thorvald owned a business in Waghorne St as an oil-skin maker, ironmonger, and general shop keeper for those of the sea port. Alberthine died age 88 in 1936.
