Daniel Joseph Byrne was born in Timaru South Canterbury. He married Annie McKay and had four children. Mona, Stuart, William and Rata Byrne.
Daniel served in the 5th and 7th contingent and was seconded into Doyles Australian Scouts. He earned himself a commission while in the field and came back to New Zealand a lieutenant.
His younger brother William Byrne was in the 1st contingent and unfortunately killed by a shell that burst above his position. He was the first one killed from Timaru who had gone to war in South Africa.
