Really excited to find this photo--My Grandfather James Thorn was just 18 years old when he was coerced by his father to join this contingent. James (Jim) survived and after his experiences here seeing the atrocities of war he became a pacifist and conscientious objector in WW1...He served time in Mt Eden prison along with others well known politicians at the time.. He went on to become among other things ..a union leader,A member of the first labour party and went on to become Leader of the NZ Labour party a MP for Thames and NZ High Commissioner to Canada..He died in 1956.
In this photo I believe he is 2nd from left in back row
Hi Lynette - it looks like he enlisted with Australian 1st Imperial Light Horse: http://members.pcug.org.au/~croe/ozb/oz_boer_more.cgi?record=10687
It is possible he switched to a NZ Contingent in Sth African, but I haven't been able to find any evidence to confirm.
I have a photo of my grandfather Daniel James Berry Jennings in the uniform of the rough riders. He came to SA with horses for the Boer War but I think he left from Australia. Could he have joined in South Africa? If so where can I find confirmation?

Is there a Harry Vickery in the photo please by any chance.
Hi, HM Cavino, I have just logged back onto this site to check out another member of my husbands family and found your comment. I have checked the photos names and H H Steedman does not appear, sorry. This is the Hawkes Bay Contingent - February 1900. I don't know much, but found this photo in amongst family bits and pieces while starting to do our family tree. Pamela
I too am interested in any photos of the Third Contingent to the Boer War. My Great Uncle John Butler started out with them, then was court martialles (reasons not known) then went on to a SA unit where he was killed. I would be interested if his name pops up in any of the photos. Many thanks
My grandfather and his brother were members of this contingent. Do you now have the names of the men in this photo. I also have a copy of a photo of some of the men in this contingent. Are you interested in a copy?
