Rachel Knox GLIDDON nee AGNEW b. Antrim ca. 1857. d. 1935, arr. NZ on Waipa 11 Dec. 1878 m. 3 April 1879 James GLIDDON b. Devon 1845 d. 1928 arr. NZ 1875 ex Royal Navy. Family legend has it that James carried Rachel ashore when she landed at Timaru. James was Timaru's 'night soil' collector and a roading contractor around 1893. They were a strict Brethren family (but in an openish faction). Mother of 6 incl. Wm. John KIA Somme 14 July 1916 Sgt NZEF #8/1994. A handsome but stern woman known as "Mrs GLIDDON" rather than Aunty to her nieces and nephews.
