Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Emma Elizabeth Brand was born about 1832 in Lambeth, Surrey, England – the daughter of Charlotte Brand.

She married Edwin Dapp, a baker, in 1853 in Brighton.

They had no children and they emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1859 on the Sussex accompanied by Emma’s mother.

They didn’t stay in Australia long and they sailed for New Zealand in the early 1860s settling at the Switzers goldfields in Southland, which later became known as Waikaia.

Emma and Edwin were partners in the firm of Dapp & Thompson, bakers, dairymen and market gardeners.

Edwin died at their home at Winding Creek, Waikaia in 1883 and about three weeks later Emma’s mother also died.

Emma continued with the business and when she signed the suffrage petition she was still living in Waikaia.

Emma died on 30 January 1895 and is buried with her mother & Edwin in the Waikaia Cemetery.
