Euphemia Ferguson Gray was born in Edinburgh in 1837, the daughter of Robert Galt Gray, comb maker, and Mary MacKay. The family migrated to Australia in 1841 and travelled on the schooner Lillian from Melbourne to Hobart in 1843. Robert became the City Missioner and Euphemia taught in the Ragged School.

In 1860 she married Thomas Tily, a widower with 3 children. By 1863, the family was in Dunedin where Thomas was the first headmaster of Portobello School. Euphemia had 12 children, one of whom, Paul, drowned in Otago Harbour. To feed the growing family, cows and poultry were kept in the school glebe.

Euphemia made her will in 1900 and died later that year.

Two of her daughters signed the petition – Ada and “Miss Tily.”
