Susan Briggs Laing was born in 1865 in Greenock, Scotland, in 1865 to William Laing, a papermaker, and Susan Briggs. Her twin William died in infancy. After the death of her father in 1868, the family travelled to Dunedin to join her mother’s extended family.

She played the piano and travelled regularly to Gisborne to visit her mother’s family.

In 1893, she married Archibald Cowie Blackadder, her stepfather’s nephew. She and Archibald travelled to Falkirk, Scotland, where she died of consumption in 1898.

Her mother signed the petition with her.
