Alice Cousins

Alice Cousins (nee Kennard) was born 30 January 1865 at Goodwood in Otago. She was the third child of William and Elizabeth Kennard and granddaughter of Otago's earliest Paheka settlers, William and Maria Kennard. Alice's father, William was nearly 4 years old when his family arrived on the Magnet, along with the Carey family, at Waikouaiti in April 1840, from Kent via Sydney. William's (jnr) brother, Thomas Baker Kennard, was "The First White Boy Born in Otago" (book by J Herries Beattie, published by AH & AW Reed, 1939. Alice Kennard married Zebedee Taylor Cousins on 16 December 1889 at Waimate. They kept bees and had a market garden, as did other members of the Kennard family. Alice's father William was the first to grow raspberries in the district. Alice and Zebedee Cousins had two children, William Wallace Cousins (1891 - 5 Oct 1933) and Effie Euphemia Eliza Sarah Cousins (1892 - 29 Dec 1920, married James Bohm). The Kennard family history "With Those Who Came First" (by Beryl Maultby) has a photograph of Alice and Zeebee in their later years. Alice has a baby on her knee - probably a grandchild. Alice signed the Women's Suffrage Petition at Waimate along with her sisters, Elizabeth Jane Telfer and Sarah Ann Kennard.
