Harriett Frances JOHNSON (née RAYNER) was born on 24 April 1852 at Marton, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND. She was the eighth of 9 children born in England to John and Betsy RAYNER. The sixth child, a daughter died aged 18 months. On 12th April 1853 John and Betsy RAYNER and their remaining children left Gravesend, ENGLAND on Lady Cornwall. They arrived at Petone, Wellington, on 13th August 1853. The Lady Cornwall did not enter Wellington harbour, but a barque was sent to bring the passengers who disembarked at Wellington as migrants.

On 8 August 1873 at the Taita, Hutt, by the Rev Mr Fancourt, Edwin, youngest son of Mr Thomas JOHNSTON [sic], Kent, England, to Harriet Frances, sixth daughter of Mr John RAYNER, Taita. Harriet and Edwin JOHNSON produced 15 children at least 7 of whom died in infancy. Details of four of the children have not yet been found.

Harriet died at Wellington on 14 November 1934. She was buried at Archer Street Cemetery, Masterton, on 16 November 1934. Her husband Edwin predeceased her in 1924.

An obituary appeared in Evening Post, 23 November 1934:

MRS. EDWIN JOHNSON.

The passing away last Wednesday of Mrs. Edwin Johnson at the age of eighty-two removed another of the old identities of Masterton. For long years an active member of the Presbyterian Church, she was of more recent years attached to the Seatoun congregation as a devoted worker. Her only surviving son, Mr. John Johnson, farmer, of Te Awamutu, is prominent in electric board matters and Farmers' Union affairs. Mrs. Johnson was buried at Masterton.
