Jessie Pollock and her mother Janet both signed the petition. Janet was born Janet Brown, and was the widow of William Pollock who was came to Otago in 1848 on the Philip Laing. Janet came in 1849 aboard the Berenicia. They married soon after her arrival. She brought with her, her toddler son, William M'Farlane, son of Thomas M'Farlane who remained in Scotland. The lad was taken into the new household. William had a success full career as a butcher, especially during the Gold Rushes! He later joined his eldest son, John Henry in Wanganui to et o]up a tallow works, but fell ill after a tooth extraction and died there in 1880, leaving his widow, Janet and younger members of the family to cope. They had been in Otepopo [Herbert] running a leasehold but were forced to return to Mosgiel. Jessie married later and they moved to Invercargill with her mother and husband, Robert Garrett, where they remained. Janet and Jessie both had literary talents and continued t make contributions to the Otago Daily Times.
