Elizabeth Fairley was the wife of William Fairley, a British soldier who served in India. Two of her daughters were born in India but the family returned to England when William was injured. He died a few years later leaving Elizabeth with 3 young children. In 1874 when the children were grown up and two were married they came to New Zealand where it appears Elizabeth survived by working as a Domestic Servant. Her daughter Sarah Tonge (nee Fairley) signed the petition with her mother.
