After his service in the Boer war Bert stayed on in South Africa and joined the colonial police force . He married his New Zealand sweetheart, Alice McIlraith, whilst on leave in London in 1906. In 1914 the couple left S.A. and returned to NZ. They had one child, Rex Bertram Winthrop b. 1915 in New Plymouth. Bert died in Auckland in 1934.
