Biographical information provided by Fiona Oliver, Alexander Turnbull Library, for the He Tohu exhibition:

Agnes Whaley was born in 1825. She married Liverpool city missionary David Olphert in 1857. Two years later they set sail from Liverpool, along with a son from David’s first marriage, arriving in Auckland in 1860. They settled in Auckland, for a time on Karangahape Road. Agnes was 35 when she had her first child, also called Agnes, in 1860. David, born in 1862, died of tetanus aged 18; and Joseph, born in 1868, died at just 3 years old. They also seem to have had another son, John, who became a well-known Reverend. Agnes died on 4 September 1913.
