Alice Maud Evans was a young farmer's wife when she signed the petition at Paparoa, Otamatea County. Alice was born in Wolverhampton, England on 5th January 1869 to James Poynton Evans, a tinsmith, and Emma nee Gittins, but came to New Zealand with her parents and 8 siblings in 1883. The family first settled in Christchurch. James Evans had been advised to emigrate for health reasons and was advised after arriving in Christchurch that he should have settled in the north. After less than a year in Christchurch the family moved to Paparoa, Northland. The Evans family were devout Christians. Alice married George Thomas Spick at Paparoa on March 2nd 1891. Alice and George were to have 3 sons and 3 daughters and lived in the Paparoa area for most of their lives. Alice, who suffered from diabetes later in life, died at the family farm near Paparoa on 10th July 1939, aged 70 and was buried at St Marks Anglican churchyard, Paparoa.
