Lucy was born in Tiverton, Devon.

Lucy Ellen Wood (née Burt) was born 10 August 1850 in Leverton, England. Her parents Susannah and George Burt a contractor.
Lucy travelled to New Zealand on board the Matoaka, arriving in Canterbury on 8 February 1869 and was listed as a general servant.
On the 10 August 1869 Lucy married Alferd Augustus Wood, a farmer at St Pauls Church at Leithfield.
Lucy died on the 17 November 1908 from heart disease in Amberley aged 58 years. Lucy is buried with an infant son William John and her husband at Balcairn Cemetery, Amberley.
Her daughter Henrietta Sandford also signed the petition.
