Matilda Jane Baird, (nee Bolton) was born in 1832 in Ballymote, Glenavy, County Antrim, Ireland. She married John Wallace Baird in 1854 in Glenavy. John and Matilda were assisted emigrants to NZ. They came aboard the ship ‘TipTree’ arriving on 20 Jan 1864; their occupations were listed as farm labourers. They arrived in Lyttleton with their first daughter Matilda, 6, and an infant, Ann. She went on to have 5 more children. Matilda signed the Women’s Suffrage Petition, sheet 256, submitted to Parliament 1893. She died at age 73, 17 Nov 1905, Sefton, N Canterbury, NZ.
