Helen Bryden Beattie was born in 1830, in Dumfries, Scotland, the daughter of William Beattie, a miller, and Jane Bryden.
Helen arrived in New Zealand about 1860. On 10 August 1866, she married George Knight, a coachbuilder, in Dunedin. George died in 1868 and there were no children from the marriage.
Helen re-married in 1874 to John Stewart, a widower with three children. They had no further children. John was also a coachbuilder. The family lived for a time in Canongate St, Dunedin. John died in 1886.
In 1893, when Helen signed the petition, the family were living in Short St, off Hanover St, in Dunedin.
Helen died on 2 April 1910. She is buried in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin, with her first husband George.
