Emma Vining was born Emma Basquin Smith Price c 1838 to Captain Smith Price.

The Intention to Marry Notice records Emma and John as both aged 23 years.

Emma married John Vining on 5 May 1866 at her residence in King Street, Dunedin.

John and Emma Vining appear on the Nominal Roll of Civil Establishment as Depot Master and Matron [Immigration Barracks]; appointed to their respective rolls on 1 April 1874 and earning a salary of pounds 25.

Emma and John had two children; Emma Julia Vining (McPherson) born 1867 and Clara Louisa Vining born 1869 (died 1884 age 15 years).

The 1875-76 electoral roll for Gladstone, Canterbury record John Vining, freehold, pt. section 5691, Major Street, Waimate.

In 1880-1881 Electoral Roll for Gladstone, Canterbury John Vining is recorded as a Labourer, Lots 79 & 80, part rural section 5691, Waimate. John lived there through to 1890.

In 1892 Emma signed the Women’s Suffrage Petition Roll. At this time she was living in John Street, Waimate.

John died in 1906 aged 63 years and is buried in the Sydenham cemetery, Christchurch; Block 6D, Plot 21.

Emma died on 20 April 1925 age 87 years and is buried in Bromley cemetery, Christchurch, Block 38, Plot 276.
