Biographical information provided by Briary Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:
Augusta Frederika Gaarder was born around 1850. She was married to John Oleef Gaarder, a storekeeper in Kaiapoi who had come to New Zealand from Norway on the Hvding in 1873. The business was sold in 1902 to Richard Wylie and John and Augusta moved into Christchurch. Augusta died 28 December, 1920, aged 70. John followed just over a year later, aged 67. They are buried together in Bromley Cemetery in Christchurch.
