Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Lucy Mary Shipley was born in 1845 in Barnstaple, Devonshire, England – the daughter of Hugh Shipley, a Master Mariner, and Mary Parcell.

Lucy married William Hooper Benoke on 26 January 1869 at Ilfracombe, Devon. William was apparently drowned in 1870.

Lucy re-married in 1878 to William Ackland, a cabman, in Reading Berkshire. Later that year they emigrated to Otago on the Fiji arriving in January 1879.

Lucy had no children, William worked as a pound keeper & they lived in St Kilda, Dunedin.

William died in the Seacliff Asylum in 1894. Lucy disappears from the records after this time & her date and place of death is unknown.
