Thomasine Elliott

Thomasine came to New Zealand onboard the ship "Carnatic" with her husband Joseph Johns and ten children. The ship sailed from Plymouth, England on 28 September 1874 and after landing passengers and some cargo at Picton arrived at Wellington on 16 January 1875.
Thomasine's family was amongst seventeen families selected by the Emigrants’ and Colonists’ Aid Corporation to settle in the Manchester Block, Feilding.
Tragedy struck the family in July 1875 when Joseph Johns was felling bush, a tree fell on his leg, and he died within 20 hours of three doctors amputating his leg. [Wanganui Herald 10 July 1875 p. 2.]
Seven years after she was widowed Thomasine remarried to Joseph Elliott on 28 August 1882, the second marriage ceremony to take place in St John's Anglican Church, Feilding after its consecration. A Post Office Directory of 1906 shows Mrs Elliott living in Sanson.
Thomasine suffered a stroike or similar affliction in old age and she lived with two of her daughters before she died in Taihape in 1910 at the age of 74.
