Margaret Jane Butement was born 1 May 1844 in Berwickshire, England – the daughter of Thomas Butement, a farmer, and Elizabeth Trotter.

She came to New Zealand with her family in the 1860s and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition she was living in Milton.

Shortly after this she sold her property and furniture and she moved to Hobart.

She died at the Hobart Homeopathic Hospital on 23 July 1908 and she is buried in the Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Hobart.

It actually is M J Butement (Margaret Jane). Signature on her 1908 will in National Archives confirms this
