Mary Ann Amelia Hicks was born in 1867 in New Zealand – the daughter of Henry Hicks and, a farmer, Adelaide Martens. (See 86 Adelaide Hicks)
Her father died in 1884 as the result of an accident and when Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Factory Rd, Mosgiel working in a factory.
She married William Stewart in 1894 and their son was born in April 1895 at her mother’s nursing home.
Mary died at her mother’s home on 18 May the same year.
She is buried in the family grave in the East Taieri Cemetery although this is not shown in the cemetery records.
