I spent a number of years as a child in this community with my kuia we were the only Maori people there. The monument used to be by the post office in those days. I used to go and play with the postmaster kids. There was a garage and a shop. Don't know if I've the name right but I think the shop keepers name was Ted Wright. The last house we live in was straight across the road from the school. At the age of 7, I put my arm outside the railcar window and got it open when the mail bag was being transferred the railway platform to the railcar. We were returning back from Danivirke and the train went straight to Waipukerau where I was taken to the hospital.
