Elizabeth Ann Stephens was born about 1839 – she married John Weatherall, a miner, in 1870 in New Zealand.

They had nine children and lived in Waipori for a few years before moving to Blue Spur, near Lawrence, where Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition.

John died in 1900 and Elizabeth died on 8 September 1910, they are buried together in the Lawrence Cemetery.

This lady was my great great Grandmother. Her name was Mary Jane Weatherall (nee Richardson). She was the daughter of Catherine Brown and Charles Richardson of Roxburgh, Central Otago. She had newly married William Weatherall when she signed the petition. She is an ancestor of many families from Central Otago. The Gilchrists, Weatheralls, Strachans to name a few.

Hi Anne - you will notice that the details in Katherine's biography differ from those you provided in your comment. Your great-great-grandmother, Mary Jane Weatherall, who was married to William Weatherall, was living in Roxburgh when the 1893 electoral roll was taken. Elizabeth Ann and husband John were living at Blue Spur in 1893. Katherine believes William and John were brothers. Gareth Phipps, Digital Production Editor, NZHistory

Hi Gareth,
This is probably correct, William is the son of John and he also resided at Blue Spur and Tuapeka areas before moving to Millers Flat with his new wife around 1890's. So, it probably means it was Elizabeth Ann nee Stephens (step mother of William) who signed the petition.
