Sarah Ellen Dash was born in 1864 in Maldon, Essex, England to John and Ann Elizabeth Dash. Sarah was the eldest of six children.
At the time of the UK 1871 census the Dash family was living in North Street, Southminster, Maldon, Essex.
John and Ann Dash and their five children left London on 31 October 1875 on the ship Otaki and arrived in Lyttleton on 8 February 1876 and went straight to Waimate.
Sarah Ellen Dash became a school teacher at the Waimate School. She passed her second year pupil teacher examination with 231 marks in 1880 and her fourth year pupil teacher examination in 1882.
In 1893 Sarah Ellen Dash married Christopher Hodgson Hurst in Waimate. Christopher Hurst was a Farmer. In 1890 Christopher was farming at Brooklands, Waimate.
Sarah and Christopher had seven children; Ella Elizabeth born 1897, Christopher John born 1895, Mary Mabel born 1897, Albert George born 1899, Dorothy Stella born 1901, Ruby Winifred born 1903 and Arthur Harold born 1911.
The Hurst family moved to Taranaki around 1896. The electoral rolls for 1896 – 1911 the Hurst family were living in Pihama in the Hawera, Taranaki electorate. From 1914 – 1938 the family was living in Waitina Road, Te Kiri, Taranaki in the Egmont electorate.
Sarah Ellen Hurst died on 13 December 1945 and is buried in Pihama (Lizzie Bell) cemetery, Taranaki along with her husband Christopher Hodgson Hurst who died on 9 September 1928.
