Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Grace Ellen Philp was born in 1862 in Northamptonshire, England – the daughter of Samuel Philp, a bricklayer & builder, and Mary Ann Emery.

Her father emigrated to Otago about 1871 and Grace followed in 1872 with her mother and siblings on the May Queen.

The family settled in Kirkland Hill, Dunedin and Grace married Colin Taylor at her home on 30 November 1892.

Colin was a widower with ten children who ran a bakery and grocery shop in Kaikorai Valley Road.

Grace and Colin had a further four children, one of who was born prematurely and died at six days after birth.

In 1896 Grace underwent an operation for cancer after which she had her fourth child.

In May 1898 she was again pregnant and both she and the baby died during the birth, the verdict of the inquest was heart failure.

Colin died in 1916 and they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
