Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Eliza France was born in 1872 in Yorkshire, England – the daughter of Allen France, a joiner, and Mary Ann Aveyard. (See 309 M A France)

She emigrated to Wellington on the Arethusa with her family in 1879 and they settled in Palmerston North.

When Eliza signed the suffrage petition she was living on the family dairy farm Yorkhouse on the Rangitikei Line, near Palmerston North.

She married Adam Kendall, a farmer, in 1898 and they had six children.

They farmed at Waitorara and Taikorea before retiring in 1920.

Eliza died on 10 August 1949 and Adam died in 1959 – they are buried together in the Purewa Cemtery, Auckland.
