Arthur Barker was recorded in the Electoral Roll Nelson 1881 as a cabinet maker. Nothing further of his early life is known until he married on 6th September 1888 at All Saints Church, Nelson to Ada Amy Alborough and lived in Palmerston North and Melbourne, Australia, where he died in 1928.
Marriage Certificate Arthur Barker
6th September 1888 All Saints Church, Nelson. Arthur Barker aged 27 a cabinet maker and a bachelor born in Wellington. Residing in Suburban North (Nelson) at present and usually. Father Edwin Hardy Barker a clerk and Mother Sarah Barker nee Walker (maiden name should be Brooks. Arthur’s sister Alice Maud married Arthur Walker) to Ada Alborough aged 21, born in Nelson no occupation given, a spinster. Residing in Suburban North. Father William Alborough a farmer and Mother Elizabeth Alborough nee Maclean. Mother should be Margaret not Elizabeth. Witness’s were William Alborough, farmer Sub Nth. Margaret Alborough Sub Nth. Emily L.Wastney of Wakapuaka. Minister A.C.Wright.
Ada’s mother had been married to a Mr Rafferty and had a daughter Elizabeth Rafferty before Mr Rafferty was killed in the Maori Wars. She later married William Alborough.
In 1893 Arthur was recorded on the Palmerston North electoral roll, along with Ada Barker. His occupation is shown as a cabinet maker, and then in 1896 he is shown as a ratepayer, also with Ada Barker. They last appear on the electoral roll in 1914 living at 63 Ferguson Street East section 881.
The death certificate for Arthur in 1928 records him living in Melbourne for 13 years, suggesting the move from Palmerston North to Melbourne was probably in 1915.
Taken from the Manawatu Evening Standard 25 Jan 1926:
Barker on the 2nd January (1926) at Melbourne, Ada, the dearly loved wife of Arthur, and loved sister of Emma and Lizzie, of NZ aged 54 years (sweet rest).
Palmerston North Evening Standard recorded library newspaper index:
"Barker A. Mrs. Death aged 54, a former Palmerston North woman in Melbourne 25 January 1926"
The service for Ada was held on 04 January 1926. Ada is buried in the Melbourne East cemetery.
